Power plant options subject to technical discussions by expert committees

In a news item from 11 March 2015 on the Master Plan website an account is given of the steering committee's decision on how to treat the 81 power plant options that the National Energy Authority had at that point in time handed over to the steering committee. In short the steering committee has decided to refer 24 options to a round of technical discussions by expert committees. Twenty three options in the energy utilisation and protection categories will be kept in there as the assumptions have not changed significantly since the 2nd phase of the Master Plan. Expert committees 1 and 2 were asked for comments on whether the assumptions regarding five power plant options had changed to such an extent that they should be re-assessed. Their conclusion was that the assumptions had not changed sufficiently for a re-assessment to take place. There are 29 power plant options left regarding which the steering committee has not yet taken a position.

On 17 March 2015 the expert committees were commissioned to deliberate on the two wind energy options that Landsvirkjun had sent for discussions, i.e. Búrfellslundur and Blöndulundur.

On 1 July 2015, Alþingi passed a proposal for a parliamentary resolution to transfer power plant option Hvammsvirkjun from the on hold-category to utilisation category.
